Join Us for Build – A – S.H.E.D.
As a Charleston Metro Chamber and ABC Carolinas “Student Hands-On Experience Day”, six schools will participate in a shed building competition Wednesday, March 13th in conjunction with the Trident Regional Career Exploration event at the Exchange Park in Ladson, SC. The objective of this competition is to promote interest in construction-related careers through experiential learning.
Build – A – S.H.E.D. begins at 7am with students building a shed from start to finish until 2:30pm and awards are announced beginning at 2:45pm.
We’d love to have volunteers as well as fans supporting these students!

The teams are tasked to build an 8′ x 11′ shed in seven hours. Each team is paired with a contractor and subcontractor coaching them to show the teamwork needed in construction.
All six teams use the same blueprint and are mentored by their contractor coaches over a three-month period in the areas of safety, quality, planning, scheduling and communication. The coaches also educate the students on the many available career options in the construction industry, and provide insight into the job application process, resume writing, and interviewing.
The competition is judged by a panel of volunteers from local businesses and government agencies or departments. The judges look at each shed, then evaluate them for technical correctness and completeness on wall framing, siding, roof framing and sheathing, windows, doors and trim. The safety award judging criteria includes personal protection equipment, ladder and scaffolding usage, housekeeping and work area, and coaching.
Participating schools this year are Berkely, Cross High, James Island Charter, Baptist Hill Middle, and Lucy Beckham High Schools in addition to East Cooper Center for Advanced Studies.
The general contractors and trade partner coaches are from Samet, Cullum, Edifice, Sunstate, Miller Valentine, Keller North America, HIIT, BrandSafway, Frampton, 35 North Painting and Drywall, Distinct Builders, and Carolina Power.
