2025 LOW Build-A-SHED Competition
Join Us for Build – A – S.H.E.D.
As the ABC Carolinas “Student Hands-On Experience Day”, four schools will participate in a mini shed building competition Tuesday, March 4th at Frampton Construction’s parking lot! The objective of this competition is to promote interest in construction-related careers through experiential learning.
Build – A – S.H.E.D. begins at 7am with students building a shed from start to finish until 2:30pm and awards are announced beginning at 2:45pm.
We’d love to have volunteers as well as fans supporting these students!

The Competition
The teams are tasked to build an 5′ x 6′ mini shed/playhouse in seven hours. Each team is paired with a contractor and subcontractor coaching them to show the teamwork needed in construction.
All four teams use the same blueprint and are mentored by their contractor coaches over a three-month period in the areas of safety, quality, planning, scheduling and communication. The coaches also educate the students on the many available career options in the construction industry, and provide insight into the job application process, resume writing, and interviewing.
The competition is judged by a panel of volunteers from local businesses and government agencies or departments. The judges look at each shed, then evaluate them for technical correctness and completeness on wall framing, siding, roof framing and sheathing, windows, doors and trim. The safety award judging criteria includes personal protection equipment, ladder and scaffolding usage, housekeeping and work area, and coaching.
The Participants
Participating schools this year are James Island Charter, Baptist Hill Middle, and Lucy Beckham High Schools in addition to East Cooper Center for Advanced Studies.
The general contractors and trade partner coaches are from Edifice, Carolina Power, Miller Valentine, Keller North America, Light Gauge, Frampton, Choate and Tidewater Interiors.
