improving the safety management system
Advancing Safety Through STEP
Launched in 1989, the Safety Training Evaluation Process (STEP) has evolved from a simple benchmarking tool into a leading safety management system. Designed for companies of all sizes and industries, STEP helps improve safety performance by evaluating procedures against 25 critical elements through a detailed questionnaire. By participating in STEP, ABC member firms can develop or enhance their safety programs, reducing incidents and creating safer jobsites.
Redefining Safety Excellence with STEP
The Safety Training Evaluation Process (STEP) Management System empowers companies to achieve unparalleled workplace safety. By providing a structured framework for analyzing and enhancing safety practices, STEP demonstrates that a dedicated focus on safety management can significantly reduce risks and elevate performance.

Working Together for a Safer Future
Advancing Safety Through Alliance
ABC Carolinas is proud to join forces with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) through the Alliance Program to elevate workplace safety across the Carolinas. This Alliance reflects our shared dedication to preventing injuries, illnesses, and fatalities by promoting education, awareness, and communication on critical safety and health issues within the construction industry.
Together, ABC Carolinas and OSHA are working to build a culture where safety is a core value and every worker’s well-being comes first. Through collaborative training, outreach, and the exchange of best practices, this Alliance emphasizes the essential role of leadership and proactive engagement in creating safer, healthier job sites across our region.
Leadership’s Role in Strengthening Safety Culture
True safety leadership starts at the top. When company executives and safety professionals engage in the OSHA Alliance, they help shape a culture where safety is more than compliance—it’s a shared responsibility. By joining this Alliance, leaders demonstrate a proactive commitment to preventing workplace injuries and fostering continuous improvement in safety performance.
Through this collaboration, ABC Carolinas and OSHA work together to provide education, outreach, and access to vital safety resources. When leaders take part in this Alliance, they set the tone for their organizations, showing that protecting workers is not just a goal—it’s a fundamental value that defines success across the construction industry.
National Safety Awards
At ABC Carolinas, we believe safety is the foundation of every successful project. That’s why we proudly participate in national award programs that honor companies committed to raising the bar for workplace safety. These awards celebrate organizations that not only meet industry standards but go above and beyond to create cultures where safety is second nature.
ABC National Safety Excellence Awards (NHSEA)
The NHSEA program recognizes ABC member companies that have demonstrated outstanding safety performance and practices. Winners are selected for their commitment to proactive safety training, innovative programs, and consistent results that protect employees and strengthen the industry as a whole.
CURT-CISE Awards
In partnership with the Construction Users Round Table (CURT), the Construction Industry Safety Excellence (CISE) Awards honor companies that demonstrate exemplary leadership in safety and workforce well-being. This prestigious recognition highlights organizations that continually set new benchmarks for safety culture across the construction industry.
